Benedict Cumberbatch makes the Time 100 most influential people of 2014 list

Entry by Colin Firth

When I was about 25 years old, I worked with two very good actors. The encounters were brief, but I’ve remembered them both with great admiration. Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton both embodied qualities which one is fogyishly tempted to look at with nostalgia. Along with very considerable talent, they had elegance, glamor, wit, kindness and decency.
I didn’t know at the time that they were married or that they had a son of about 10 who was quietly gestating all the same attributes. And now, 30 years later, the boy has been let loose. He has taken the form of Benedict Cumberbatch.
His parents’ qualities are on rampant display. It’s rare to the point of outlandish to find so many variables in one actor, including features which ought to be incompatible: vulnerability, a sense of danger, a clear intellect, honesty, courage — and a rather alarming energy. I take no pleasure in feeling humbled, but there’s no getting around it.
He must be stopped.

“Nothing prepares you for Gaza; no amount of UN humanitarian reports, no amount of newspaper articles, no amount of human rights investigations. None of these can adequately convey what the people here are going through; the profound sense of isolation and the sheer scale and depth of the suffering,” said Pierre Krähenbühl, the new Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), on his first official visit to the Gaza Strip. He underscored the need to lift the seven-year Israeli blockade and end the “illegal collective punishment” unleashed on the population there. Read the full story here.

Our Very Short Fact this week is about William Shakespeare, who died on this day 1616.

Shakespeare was widely admired in his own time, still more so after the publication of the First Folio. But he was not initially regarded as superior to all his contemporaries. Sir Richard Baker’s Chronicle of the Kings of England (1643) was representative in judging that ‘For writers of plays, and such as had been players themselves, William Shakespeare and Benjamin Jonson, have specially left their names recommended to posterity.’

Ukraine’s acting president calls for action against pro-Russian separatists
Ukraine’s acting president has called for the resumption of military operations against pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country, claiming two of his party’s supporters had been “tortured to death”, in a further blow to an unravelling international peace plan.
Oleksandr Turchynov said “counter-terrorist” operations in the region, suspended as part of the peace agreement in Geneva last Thursday, should restart after the bodies of two men, one a pro-Kiev politician, had been found near the rebel-held town of Slavyansk. Full story
